Honouring Mothers, Honouring Ourselves: Blossoming with Peony

A blooming yellow peony surrounded by green foliage.
A radiant, golden Peony in full bloom—its sweet fragrance drifting through my friend’s garden into our hearts.

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the women who nurture, protect, and love—whether they are mothers in the traditional sense, or those who mother through presence, care, and deep-rooted compassion.

It’s also a time for reflection, a moment to turn inward and honour the same qualities within ourselves.

One of the most beautiful reflections of feminine strength and softness in the plant world is Paeonia lactiflora, or White Peony.

With its lush blooms and strong medicinal potency, Peony reminds us of our own potential to soften, to regulate, and to bloom—often in the face of life’s more difficult seasons.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Peony root has been used for thousands of years to support hormonal balance, ease menstrual and menopausal transitions, relieve pelvic and muscular tension, and calm the nervous system.

It is deeply respected for its ability to regulate the menstrual cycle, support fertility, reduce excess androgens, and even assist during the often-overlooked struggles of perimenopause.

But beyond its physical actions, Peony is symbolic of something far more intimate: the unfolding that happens when we begin to care for ourselves as tenderly as we care for others.

This is the deeper message I hope you carry with you today. That like the layers of a Peony flower, your own healing is allowed to be slow. You are allowed to open gradually. You are allowed to be held, supported, and guided—not just by plants, but by wise people who walk beside you.

Peony is not a cure-all. While it may seem gentle, it works deeply on hormonal, immune, and nervous system levels. That’s why I recommend that anyone wanting to work with Peony as a medicine do so under the care of a trained Medical Herbalist. Especially when navigating conditions like PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, or cycle irregularity, having someone to help track your patterns and recommend the right preparation and dose is essential.

Peony can work wonders—but only when its use is well understood. If you’ve been feeling out of sync with your cycle, overwhelmed by the transition into menopause, or just yearning for steadiness,

I invite you to see yourself in this flower. Let it remind you that softness is strength. That steadiness can be nurtured. And that your own blossoming is worth tending to—with care, with support, and with the time it needs.

To the mothers.

To those who mother.

To you. 🌸
